A 3PL for a Shopify Plus brand connects the same way it would to any Shopify store, as one more location that receives orders and posts tracking back. What Plus adds is more stores, Plus-only B2B payment features, checkout apps that rename shipping methods, and Launchpad events that drop a sale at a set minute. So the questions to ask a 3PL are about those four, and each one is worth testing before you cut over.

Here's what Plus actually changes for the warehouse, what it doesn't, a table you can send to a 3PL, and how we run Plus stores at YNK. The basics of the connection itself, locations, fulfillment requests, tracking and refunds, are in our Shopify 3PL integration guide, so this one stays on what's different at Plus.

What Shopify Plus changes for a 3PL, and what it doesn't

Less than you'd think from the sales page. Several features Plus brands lean on are on other plans too. Shopify B2B is available on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus, and Shopify Flow, the automation app, is free on the same four plans, both checked November 2026. Order routing rules like ranked locations and location metafields are described on Shopify's routing page with no plan named.

The parts that are Plus-only, and that reach the warehouse, are narrower. Plus organizations get ten stores, one main store and nine expansion stores, checked November 2026. Plus stores can have 200 active locations, against 10 on Basic, Grow and Advanced, checked November 2026. Apps that customize the information, shipping and payment steps of checkout are Plus-only, and so is Launchpad, the app that schedules sale events, both checked November 2026. On the B2B side, deposits, partial payments and payment requests per fulfillment are Plus-only features, checked November 2026.

Which Plus features reach the warehouse, in one table

Send this table to any 3PL you're talking to, alongside the questions to ask a 3PL. The middle column is what Shopify's help pages say, and the right column is what you want to hear back.

What happens when expansion stores share one warehouse

Plus brands use expansion stores for a second country, a wholesale store, a second brand or a staff store. Shopify's expansion store page says each contract gets one free B2B store, and it's direct about the catch: store settings, products, collections and inventory aren't synced between stores, and apps are billed per store (checked November 2026). Your 3PL connects to each store separately.

That's where the questions start. Say you sell the same 40 SKUs in a US store and a Canadian store. If the warehouse treats them as two accounts, you'll have two counts of the same units, and one store can sell a unit the other already sold. If it treats them as one pool, it has to write the same physical count to both stores and keep it current as orders come in from either one. Ask which it does.

Packing rules need to follow the store too. Inserts, branded mailers and gift notes should match the store the order came from, so ask how the warehouse tells them apart.

Where your 3PL ranks in Plus order routing

The 200-location ceiling rarely matters for a 3PL, because app locations don't count toward it (checked November 2026). What matters is where the new location lands. Shopify adds a new location to the bottom of your routing list, so on a Plus store with retail stores, a pop-up and an office, your 3PL can rank last the day you connect it.

Plus brands with more than one stocking location usually write routing rules. Shopify's routing page lists the defaults, which minimize split shipments, keep orders in the destination market and then ship from the closest location, plus two optional rules: ranked locations and location metafields, such as a true-or-false field named has_capacity (checked November 2026). A ranked rule that puts the warehouse first for online orders and the shops first for local pickup is a common pattern. Write down the order you want before cutover, then check it on test orders, because a rule that ranks a retail store above the warehouse will send web orders to a stockroom.

If all your sellable stock moves to the 3PL, routing gets simpler. You turn off online fulfillment at the old location and the warehouse handles everything. Our guide to one inventory pool for every channel covers the buffers you'll want when the same count also feeds a marketplace.

What the warehouse sees as your shipping method after Scripts

Every order tells the warehouse how the customer chose to ship. The 3PL maps that checkout method name to a carrier service, so Standard becomes one ground service and Express becomes a faster one. On Plus, that name is often set by an app. Apps that customize the shipping step of checkout are Plus-only (checked November 2026), and before this year Plus stores could also use shipping scripts to change shipping methods and discount rates.

Those scripts are gone. Shopify's Script Editor page says Scripts were deprecated as of June 30, 2026, and any still published were deactivated (checked November 2026). If your shipping logic moved to an app or a Shopify Function, check that the method names on new orders still match the names in your 3PL's map. A renamed method that's missing from the map often falls back to a default service, so an Express order goes out by ground and nobody notices until the reviews come in.

Fixing it takes about ten minutes of someone's afternoon. Export the shipping method names from a week of orders, send them to the warehouse, and ask for the service each one maps to. Do it again whenever someone changes a checkout app.

B2B orders on Plus, where payment can wait for the warehouse

B2B on Shopify works on four plans, and the core of it, companies, net terms, PO numbers and checkout to draft, is on all of them, according to the B2B features by plan page, checked November 2026. Plus adds deposits, partial payments, payment requests per fulfillment, catalogs assigned straight to a company, and no cap on active catalog assignments, where other plans allow 3.

Two of those depend on the warehouse. Shopify's payment terms page offers net terms from 7 to 90 days counted from the order date, and a due-on-fulfillment term where payment is due after every item on the order is fulfilled (checked November 2026). On a due-on-fulfillment order, the fulfillment your 3PL posts starts the clock on your invoice. With payment requests per fulfillment on Plus, a retailer order that ships in two cartons on two days can be billed in two parts, but only if the warehouse posts two fulfillments.

So ask your 3PL how it posts B2B shipments. One fulfillment per carton or pallet, with tracking, is what you want. Wholesale orders also bring case packs, carton labels and routing guides, and our B2B and wholesale fulfillment guide walks through those.

Holds, Flow, Launchpad and subscriptions: when an order reaches the warehouse

An order that's paid isn't always an order the warehouse can see. Shopify's fulfillment holds page says a hold blocks fulfillment until it's released, takes the order off the Unfulfilled list, and can be placed by you, by an app or by a Flow workflow (checked November 2026). A post-purchase upsell places a hold that stays on for one hour, or until the customer accepts or declines the offer. That matters at a noon cutoff, because an order paid at 11:30 with an upsell offer open can reach the warehouse after noon and ship the next business day.

Flow is where most Plus stores make their own holds. Its action list includes Hold fulfillment order, Release fulfillment order holds, Add order tags, Move fulfillment order and Submit fulfillment request (checked November 2026). A fraud check that holds high-risk orders, a tag for orders with a gift message, a hold on addresses that fail validation: each one changes what the warehouse receives. Give the 3PL the list of workflows that touch orders, and test one of each before cutover.

Launchpad changes when orders arrive, because an event can switch your theme, lock the store behind a password page until the start time, and end on a schedule, checked November 2026. That's a drop that starts on the minute. Tell the warehouse the date, the start time and the order count you expect at least a week ahead, the same way you'd plan peak season.

Subscriptions are the last timing question. Shopify's subscription fulfillment page says pay-per-delivery renewals arrive as new orders at each interval, while a prepaid subscription is one order that shows Scheduled until its fulfillment date, when it turns Unfulfilled and its inventory is reserved (checked November 2026). A connection that only picks up orders when they're created can miss later prepaid cycles, so test one through a fulfillment date. The subscription box guide covers the billing-day wave.

What to test on a Plus store before you cut over

Run these while your current warehouse is still shipping, with tagged test orders to an address you control.

  1. List every store in your Plus organization that ships physical orders, and confirm with the 3PL which ones it'll connect and whether they draw on one count.
  2. Place a test order in each store and check that the count drops in every store that sells that SKU.
  3. Move the 3PL's location to the rank you want in each store's routing list, and place an order that would route somewhere else if the rank were wrong.
  4. Export a week of shipping method names, send them to the 3PL, and place one test order on each method to check the carrier service on the label.
  5. Run one order through each Flow workflow that holds, tags or moves orders, and one with a post-purchase upsell, and note when each reaches the warehouse.
  6. Place a B2B test order on a due-on-fulfillment term, ship it in two cartons, and check that two fulfillments with tracking post to the order.
  7. Run a prepaid subscription through a fulfillment date, and send the warehouse your next Launchpad event with its start time.

How Shopify Plus runs at YNK

We run the whole building on ShipStation, and Shopify connects natively, Shopify Plus included. Paid orders sync in with the variants, quantities, address, shipping method and order notes, and tracking syncs back out, so your store marks the order fulfilled and sends the shipping email the way it does today. Subscription orders from apps like Recharge arrive as normal Shopify orders and ship on the same cutoff as a first purchase.

Your shipping rules come with the store. During onboarding we map which checkout method goes to which carrier service, a signature threshold on high-value orders, and a thank-you card or insert in every box into the WMS, so send us the new names whenever your checkout changes. Shopify, Amazon and TikTok Shop orders draw on one inventory pool, and wholesale and retailer orders ship from the same building and the same stock, with EDI for the retailers that require it. If you run expansion stores, list each one in the intake.

Orders in by noon Eastern (12pm ET) ship the same business day. Anything later goes out the next business day, or within two to three business days during peak. Every unit gets scanned against the order before it goes in the box, which keeps pick and pack error under 0.3% across more than 1.2 million orders a year. When Nominal called a last-minute warehouse sale, more than 10,000 orders landed in one weekend and every one shipped within SLA, which is what a Launchpad drop looks like from our side.

The rates are the same for Plus as for any store: an estimated $3.00 per order for handling, $3.00 per returned parcel and $0.65 per cubic foot per month for storage. Postage is billed semi-monthly per shipment, at extremely competitive carrier rates, and there's no setup fee. The Shopify connection, the ShipStation WMS and the live dashboard are all included in those rates. The Shopify fulfillment page has the rest, and most brands are live in under two weeks.

Questions Plus brands ask about a 3PL

Does a Shopify Plus store need a different 3PL integration?

Usually not, because Plus connects through the same apps and the same location model as other plans. What changes is what you test: expansion stores, routing ranks, checkout apps that rename shipping methods, B2B fulfillments and the timing of Flow holds and Launchpad events.

Can one 3PL ship for several Plus expansion stores?

Yes, but ask how. Shopify doesn't sync inventory between expansion stores, so the 3PL connects to each store and has to keep each store's count right. Ask whether the stores share one physical count, then test it with an order in each store.

Why did my Express orders start shipping ground?

Check the shipping method names. If a checkout app or a replacement for a shipping script renamed a method, the warehouse's map may not know the new name and may fall back to a default service. Send the 3PL the current names and the service each should use.

Will a post-purchase upsell delay my orders?

It can. Shopify's upsell hold stays on for up to one hour, or until the customer answers the offer, and the warehouse can't ship a held order. Near a noon cutoff, that can move an order to the next business day.
